Swantest has extensive experience in carrying out load capacity testing across a wide range of structures throughout the demolition and construction sectors. Understanding the true load capacity of an existing floor slab is a critical factor in planning safe and efficient demolition works, particularly where top-down methods rely on machinery operating on existing structures.

To determine what plant can safely operate on a slab, we carry out controlled load testing to measure performance and deflection under applied loads. Unlike purely theoretical assessments, physical testing can often demonstrate additional capacity, allowing for the use of larger machinery and delivering significant time and cost savings on site.

Our testing methods typically involve the use of hydraulic jacking systems, with loads applied in a controlled manner. Where required, we can also utilise water-filled kentledge systems or concrete weights, depending on site constraints and test requirements.

In addition to demolition-related testing, we regularly carry out load capacity tests for:

  • Ground bearing slabs and pile groups to assess settlement performance

  • Timber jetties and waterfront structures for refurbishment works

  • Structures undergoing change of use assessments

  • Existing timber floors with unknown structural condition

  • Lifting beams and gantry cranes

  • Suspended slabs intended for stockpiling or increased loading

All testing is completed under UKAS-accredited processes, ensuring reliability and compliance with industry standards, with clear reporting suitable for submission to engineers, clients and regulatory bodies.
